A careful application sequence for heat-seal patch backings.
Application sequence
Pressure, temperature, and time must work together.
Backing systems and garment fabrics vary. The settings supplied with your approved order take priority over any generic instruction.
- Confirm that both the patch and garment were approved for heat application. Check the garment care label and avoid leather, waterproof coatings, and heat-sensitive fabrics unless they have been tested.
- Place the garment on a clean, firm, heat-resistant surface. Smooth the application area so there are no seams, wrinkles, or pockets beneath the patch.
- Preheat the application area briefly to remove moisture. Do not use steam.
- Position the patch and cover it with a clean pressing cloth or protective sheet.
- Apply firm, even pressure using the temperature and dwell time supplied with your production order. Hold the press still rather than sliding it like an iron.
- If the garment allows it, turn it inside out and apply a short press from the reverse side to help the adhesive settle into the fabric.
- Let the area cool completely before flexing or testing an edge. Heat-seal adhesive develops its hold as it cools.
- If an edge has not bonded, cover and re-press only according to the supplied settings. Excess heat can damage the patch or garment.
For workwear, frequent washing, stretch fabrics, or high-stress placements, perimeter sewing may be recommended even when a heat-seal backing is used.
